Structure of Earth
This shows the inside layers of the earth as if we cut out a wedge from the planet. Which layer is the thickest? Which layer is the thinnest? |
This shows the inside layers of the earth if we cut the planet in half and separate the layers. Which layer has the most volume? Which layer has the least volume? (Be careful... the crust appears to be larger, but pay attention to how thin it is...) |
Remember that the Mantle is a layer of liquid rock, while the crust on top is solid. --What kind of heat transfer happens in moving liquids? --As the hotter part of the mantle rises, what forms on the surface? --As the colder part of the mantle sinks, what forms on the surface? --What's happening to the pieces of crust above the moving liquid? |
Focus on 1:25 - 5:10 --What are the two layers of the Core like? --Why is the Inner Core solid, even at such high temperatures? --What is the Mantle like? --What is the Crust like? --What makes different pieces of the Crust move? --How fast does this happen? |
