Stimulus: an outside force that causes an organism to react Tropism: how plants turn or move in response to a stimulus. Tropisms are when plants move towards or away from a stimulus. If parts of a plant are moving towards a stimulus, it is considered a positive tropism. If parts of a plant are moving away from a stimulus, it is considered a negative tropism. |

Check out this poor confused plant.
It's on its side. It wants to move away from the earth's gravity (so that the leaves grow upwards). Gravitropism/Geotropism is a negative tropism. But there's a light coming from below. It wants to move towards the light (so that the leaves can get the most sun). Phototropism is a positive tropism. So what ends up happening? |
